Whether you are staying in the West Lafayette area, going home to see family, or adventuring somewhere new, you’ve likely spent time planning your week. As you finalize your plans, CARE encourages you to check off a few important items from your safety list.
- Share your plans: Let someone you trust know your itinerary. This could include where you are staying and when you are traveling. Keep friends or family updated if plans or location change. Identify emergency contacts on your phone.
- Trust your instincts: Be aware of your surroundings and listen to your gut! If something does not feel right or safe, remove yourself from the situation and get somewhere safe.
- Know the Area: Have the address of your accommodations saved and be familiar with nearby routes and landmarks. Keep your cell phone charged and your ID on you. Know how to access local emergency services (police, fire, medical). When using rideshare apps, confirm driver’s identity and vehicle details before entering.
- Prioritize Security: Do not share hotel room numbers, door access codes, or keys. Lock doors and windows and use the hotel safe for valuables. Carry only small amounts of cash and safeguard your debit/credit cards. Establish a code word with friends to signal discomfort. If you go out together, leave together. Don’t leave anyone behind.
- Drink Responsibly and Safely: If you choose to drink, do so responsibly, and know the laws of your location. Eat beforehand, stay hydrated, and always keep your drink insight. If you lose sight of your drink, or believe it to be tampered with, throw it away immediately. If you or a friend appears more intoxicated than expected, or you suspect drugging, seek medical attention right away.
- Water Safety: If you are near water, practice safety precautions. Swim with a friend, avoid drinking alcohol near water, stay hydrated, and wear sunscreen.
- Technology Safety: Avoid posting your real-time location on social media, including check-ins or identifiable hashtags. Consider sharing travel photos after your return.
